Design for PowerPoint Slide

Bear, Jacci, H. (2010) stated thatThe main purpose of PowerPoint slides is to deliver your purpose to the audience. Match the design with your purpose will be necessary for the designer. is it to persuade? entertain? inform? or sell? the using of colours, clip art and template must always be consistent with your purpose.
Reep,Diana,C. (2006) also stressed that every document design always refers to the physical appearance. the written text must work together with its presentation in order to deliver informations for audience.

Reep also defined four design principles: Balance, Proportion, sequence and consistency by which a designer must consider in order to create the 'look' they want for a document. By using my own presentation slides to provide critical point of view on how good PowerPoint slides will looks like.

figure 1.0

figure 2.0

figure 3.0

Balance, in every design, having comparable visual 'weight'. design for the PowerPoint slide should not too pack and not too empty. "the most relevant law is that of equilibrium, or pragnanz, which suggests that items in a visual field strive for balance or equilibrium with other items in the field" (Bernhardt, A. 1986).

Look at figure 1.0 and 2.0 above, the structure of the element is balance including the color of  the background. using colorful design on the left side will able to draw attention, and freshing  the mind of the reader. as well as i am using white color background to balance up all the elements in the slide. providing white space in order to create balance and proportion for the slides.
providing enough white space for reader in order to help them to process the text efficiently as well as rests readers' eyes and direct them to the important information (Reep, 2006).

Proportion, its all about the size and placement of the element in a design. compare both figure 2.0 and figure 3.0, the size of text in 3.0 is not as much as 2.0.  it is design so in order to avoid monotonous for reader (reep, 2006). The heading size will be so much bigger than the text. that is created in order to emphasize more on it. in figure 3.0, there is 2 columns table. the amount of space for the column must be balance up as well.

Sequence, the arrangement of the design must be in correct order. people always tend to read from top left and end up in bottom right. both figure 1.0 and 2.0 have good sequence arrangement in it. starting from the top with the most important element (heading) and continue with detail explanation on the heading/ topic.
Consistency, similar feature in a similar style (reep, 2006) included: margin, typeface, indentations. A fourth law of gestalt, the law of similarity, suggests that units which resemble each other in shape, size, color,or direction will be seen together as a homogenous grouping. (Bernhardt, A. 1986). in my slides, i only use 2 color text (purple and black). and 1 typeface (Constantia). same type of bullet, as well as same size of the margin.

New media impact on Journalism world

"it's a truism that our communications environment is changing" (Naughton, 2006) that is what happen with media publishing system nowadays. Traditional media (print media) to new media (online, broadcast). (Walsh, 2006) also stated that there are the paradigm shift (Bearne, 2003) has occured for today's environment filled with visual, electronic and digital text in which referred to 'multimodal' (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2001).

In depth discussion
Newspaper designers always play with huge canvas and the design of newspaper can be more striking and yet intricate and pack much more impact than a web page (Neilson, 1999).But since New Media is starting to dominate the communications environment, writing and designing for new media will be totally different from traditional media. in early years media print newspaper, reader tend to read linearly (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2006) The relationship between the reader and the text within the whole reading process is a two-way recursive and dynamic interaction that occurs within both an immediate and wider socio-cultural context (Walsh, 2006). Both traditional media and new media can be classified as multimodal text (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2006). the element of both text and picture can be find in the traditional print media. but if we compare to new online media we can find more elements in it included sound, animation, picture, text, video and so on.

Naughton, J. 2006, in his journal of Blogging and Media Ecosystem he stated that the arrival of new media publishing form represented the first revolutionary transformation of our communications environment. people tend to learn very fast how to use this new media form that also caused of cultural changes as well. he also stated that there is a 'wipe out' scenario by which a product of mindset that sees the world mainly in terms of market and market share. e.g when the web arrived, people predicted that it would wipe out newsprint. The crisis of print media might be occur when people tend to interact more and get their needs from new media (broadcast media - TV).

    What is Blogging Community?
a group number of people that share a similar interest and discussion always occur between the group directly or indirectly.

How to form a blogging community?
For illustration,at first an individual starting to blog in specific topic, e.g gaming. then they will start to find other individual that share the same interest which is gaming. commenting on eac other blog, and using web tool such as RSS (Really Simple Syndication) will make them easier to interact with each other. interaction not only occur in the cyberspace. whereas sometimes the community decided to meet up and interact in the real world e.g gathering and sharing.
The technological act has joined and play an important role in online community, in early year before blog are created, people tend to use BBSs (Bulletin Board Sytem), Forums and joined email to interact. different from this new era, whereby blog adoption accelerated people use webtool to drive the traffic to your blog; such as RSS, tagging, mashups, Share Your Story with discussion board based, comment post, and other social networking site (facebook, twitter, myspace)  will be useful as well.

    Different Types of Blogging Community
According to Nancy White (2006), there are three main pattern of blogging community,
    1. Blogger Centric Community, also known as single blog

    Source:http://kt.flexiblelearning.net.

Owned by one blogger/ organisation that become the central identities
    • there may be more than one people who write the blog
    • blogging tools for this communities ; WordPress, Blogger, and Typepad
    • Blog's owner has fully control on the blog; set the rule, censorship issue towards comment from member shows that there is NO expectation democracy
    • looking at the subject matter, it is almost same like broadcast-like. central blogger will set the topic, member will respond to it.
This community develop over time depends hard on communities perspective. there is a situation in which key commentors come and attract their own set of reader in comment may turn them to create their own blog. in different situation, other commentors might be add this blog to their daily reading.
ex : European Mozilla Community Blog

        2.  Central Connecting Topic Community, network formation

    Source:http://kt.flexiblelearning.net.

Community can be form by a common passion or topic
    • Topic will be central of the identities for the blog. it manifest through the relevance of the topic, quality and amount of enjoyment that the community can get from a post.
    • there are no specific tools, blogger select their own tool.
    ex: Food Blog

    3. Boundaried Communities,

    Source:http://kt.flexiblelearning.net.

Member register and 'join' basis blog. and the community are able to create a blog.
    • example ; Myspace, Yahoo360, Share YourStory.
    • Farmer's (2006), Australian free educational blogging sites; Edublogs, ESLblogs
    •  blogging tools such as; RSS, discussion board, social networking site and etc
    • Power in boundaried communities exercised by the bloggers depends on three typical ways; frequent, popularity, social networking tools.

    EXAMPLE OF BLOGGING COMMUNITY

    GALAXIE BLOG
    source : Galaxy.com.my

A blog that created by a magazine company called as GALAXIE, basically blog about entertainment in Malaysia. in my point of view, i  will classify Galaxie blog community under Blogger Centric Community. owned by an organisation and there are more than 1 writer in the blog.
more than 1 writer in the blog

GALAXIE BLOG using webtools such as RSS, Twitter, Comment box and etc. full authority under Star Publication (Malaysia) which mean Star Publication has full control towards its content and 'cries of censorship' white (2006) might be applied as well on its content.

    DIFFERENT SYSTEM OF BLOG CLASSIFICATION

An interview has been done by ABC Radio National on Taxonomy of Blog with Margaret Simon (Author and Media Analyst); here are 9 types of blogs according to Margaret.

    1. Pamphleteering blog, also known as old tradition blog that arguing and express a strong point of view. such as: Politic blog, updating on current events on political matter. some example that Margaret stated such as Larvatus Prodeo, Andrew Norton.

    2. Digest blog, guides blog and summaries to subject that you can access elsewhere. Margaret argued that this    blog become less important because social networking site has overtaking its function.
ex : Fair Go Fairfax, and the rival Fairfax management site Just the Fact, link that established by the journalist. they compile articles and news form mainstream media. both sites often link to the same articles.

    3. Advocacy blog, established by advocacy group and concern on single topic
ex; The Greens, blog that concern on environment issue.

    4. The Popular Mechanics blog, offer training and advices in specialist field. almost same like magazine function.
ex; Skaters, specialist in skating sport and Aussie gardening.

example of The Popular Mechanic blog

    5. The Exhibition blog, recognize as vanity publishing. maintained by craftspeople, artists, writer to bring their work to the wider audience around the world.
    ex; poetry blog, quilting blog.

example of exhibition blog: quilts blog

    6. The GateWatcher blog, small group of blog that monitoring the media. bloggers cover what media doesn't.
    ex : Possum Comitatus

    7. The Diary, individual blog that created for friends and family. contain news, photo, and information of personal.

    8. The Advertisement, a close relative with advocacy blog. main goal is to boost up the sales of their product.
    ex : nuffnang

    9. The News blog,  break the news, bloggers will attend the media conferences.

    Moreover, there are 8 types of blog classification according to TDavid, which are;

    1. Linklog, also known as social bookmarking blog. e.g Delicious
    2. Moblog, providing pictures from camera or mobile devices e.g Flikr
    3. Podcast, known as audio recording blog e.g imeem
    4. Vlog, providing popular video in different format mp4, wmv e.g Youtube, Metacafe
    5. Microblog, blog that contain short text entries about one's daily activities e.g twitter
    6. Miniblog, using small amount of content to shorter the original material e.g Tumblr
    7. Liveblog, covering more to the live event show e.g Cinematical
    8. Blog, lmore detail posting in article form e.g blogspot, wordpress
In my opinion when we try compare both Margaret Simon and TDavid style of categorization, I think Margaret Simon has more effectiveness compare to TDavid.  "Antony Funnell, the interviewer from ABC also pointed that the word "blog" itself doesn't give clear idea about the content or nature of a given online site. supported by Margaret Simon describes the term as 'manifestly inadequate', because it offers so little differentiation" (abc.net, 2008). I realize that some blogs that have many combination of style make us confuse in identifying the type of blog. for instant, Kenny Sia. besides using video and picture, there are a lot of other elements inside his blog, it will create a situation whereby it is hard for us to identify the type and genre of the blog if we use TDavid classification. while if we refer to Margaret's taxonomy of blog, we can classify KennySia's blog under Diary blog.
